What are some good methods YOU use to get the style YOU love?? I tend to use velcro rollers for my hair, but before I got it chopped in layers, I found that there was a lot of breakage with my hair. I have since tried to stop using them-but lately I have gone back a few times. They just don't work out so well on my hair anymore-the top comes flatter and the bottom gets way too curly.

I sometimes use a flatiron too but now it just gets my hair static-y which drives me crazy, so THAT is going away for a while!

I love using my steam rollers though-the Caruso Molecular steam rollers..it is a small machine that you put water in (the old ones you had to put salt in as well), and it blows out steam. Then you put the sponge roller on top, wrap your hair around it (I like to do a spiral twist), and then put the plastic sheild on the heat and then on the roller. You get VERY nice curls that are soft...but as of late, my hair has been going flat in a hurry even the same DAY I put them in!!

So today I tried something new...I read in a magazine about pincurls-so I washed my hair and added mousse, gel and texturizer. Then I got small sections of hair, twisted them and then twirled them around and attached them to my head with a flat pin. I did some little ones and big ones. They are QUITE a challenge to twist around your head so it took some time.

Then I went ahead and dried them...when I took them out some came out a bit straigher than others, but the fatter ones came out in big curls and look SOOO good...so now my hair is very wavy, almost looking like I got a perm-and it was so easy to style-I LOVE this idea. Next time I will just aim to make bigger twists since the smaller ones are JUST about on the verge of being frizzy....

So pincurls are ALL the way to go in my books...I will try to get a picture of it!! Grin

Wow Lisa it looks like you were successful with your hairstyle, great to see that the curls turned out fabulous and that even though it was somewhat of a challenge, good stuff  Cheesy!

I have never, ever, been successful with magazine styles, curlers, crimpers, mousse, gel, hairspray or any of that stuff  Sad... I wish I did though.

For now my hair is shoulder length, with copper highlights on a dark brown base...I'm thinking about what to do with it, because I don't know how to style it anymore  Sad .... I will be taking up some advice from a co-worker though, you have to watch what you choose when it comes to hair. I've been told that you have to be careful for what you choose because of how it's going to look on you...When I was a kid I had short hair, and I looked like a boy oy  Shocked (boy oy, doesn't that sound funny  Tongue?). So I'm going to be going through some hair magazines, and find something to do with my hair.

Sharon, you can always get the Friends cut-the Jennifer Aniston one-I always loved that style and who cares if others say it is out now...I love the layered look-maybe try some nice long layers?? You can either do them WITH bangs or without.

I am still growing mine out but some days it is SO hard to wokr with-my bangs are now below my chin and tend to get kinda hard to puff up-but I try to refrain because then I get that ski slope on my forehead! lol

I am a pro with hair styling products even though it takes FOREVER to use them....sometimes it would be much easier wearing a wig! lol

I'm thinking of maybe doing that Lisa, because I have a square face to begin with so I can't allow myself to have short square cuts. I have to let my hair grow a little longer and from there I'll work on layers and bangs. Good idea, thanks  Smiley.

Ugh I had a really BAD hairstyle today and I regret doing my hair in pincurls last night. The past TWO times that I have done the pincurls, my hair has turned out really nice. Yesterday I decided to make bigger ones instead of tiny sections of hair because I would have to actually sleep on them and didn't want to hurt my head. So I had about 6 big sections of hair that were twisted and rolled then pinned up...it took them a long time to dry and I still had to go after it this morning.

Then I let my hair down and OMG it was awful..I looked like I had fried hair that just came out of dreadlocks or something-it was really bad...and I had no time to try and do anything fancy with it-thankfully I got my hair up and stuck it in a pony tail and left the ends lose-that saved the day...but if I would have left it down, people would have thought I slept on rocks for 3 weeks with THAT hairstyle! Oy Shocked

Pincurls are a very 30s and 40s thing to do...what you do is get a small section of hair (about an inch wide) then you twist it as if you are doing a tight rope-that is the important step...once you have your hair twisted in a rope, you then turn it around in circles so that you can have almost little Princess Leya rolls on your head-and you pin them down so they don't unwind...you do that to many sections of your hair-so twist and then twirl in a small bun on your head and pin with clips. It takes FOREVER to dry them though so it is smart if you do it when you have lotsa time.

This was a trick my mom's dresser used on her to find out if she had naturally curly hair...that was all he did and then he dried it-when he took out the curls, her hair looked like it had a perm!! My hair looks cool that way too-the twisting makes your hair nice and curly which is neat...but you HAVE to do it right or else your hair will end up like a frizz ball..oy.

Alicia-I think that could work with your hair, but you would have to do many twists because your hair is so thick-be sure to never do them TOO small or else you will get an afro puff! lol

It is very time consuming but gives you those neat waves in your hair-if you look at my blog under the Italian Xmas Eve section-my hair was done that way-it turned out pretty good! Smiley

i recently got my hair cut into layers...first time i've ever had that done in my life. and i LOVED them. but my hairdresser did my hair straight...so when i first washed my hair and let it dry curly, the same way i had done when it was all the same length i HATED it and kept it straight for awhile. but now i've figured out how to scrunch it the right way so the curls don't take over and i have to say that i LOVE the cut now. i'm even thinking of getting more and shorter layers next time...even though i know i will go through the same crisis again!  Cheesy

Layers are pretty cool and I have really enjoyed mine-my dresser did my hair dry when he cut it which made sense to me. The only problem with layers is that it requires way more work AND when they start growing out, your hair gets very stringy. That is what I am noticing with mine-I have some pretty big split ends happening, but I can't even get my mom to even out my hair because my layers don't match up...so I guess that is why my dresser said that I would need to go back to get my hair re-done by December or so. I may do that in a few months, but if my layers are decently short, why go back and get them even shorter? So I will just grow them until the top part is too hard to style with and then get the job done over. It is a good thing my layers aren't TOO short...so I guess I gotta deal with the split ends for now-but that is ok because I LOVE to cut them anyways!!

Steph-layers and curly hair totally go hand in hand...you are right though, it is all about how you scrunch them and what kind of product you use to make them curly!!

Layers are great, but you're right, you really do need a professional to trim them up.

Smiley Well I got my hair cut and styled today. I usually get a curly curl perm (like an afro) and then just get to keep cutting it short as it grows. So I usually get one perm a year and it cut twice a year. My daughter is trying to talk me into getting my hair streaked, I told her "No way". I dyed my hair once when I was about sixteen and haven't used any chemicals on it since, except for the perms.  She said that it would cover up my grey hairs, but hey I earned those fair and square.  Wink
I just started perming my hair a couple years ago. Before I used to shave my head. Yep, someone dared me to, so I did, and I loved it. Unfortunately no one else did. I have shaved my head three times in the past few years.
Now when I want to get my hair done all I have to do is threaten to shave my head and my hubby says  go get your hair done Cheesy! That way he doesn't complain about the cost. Wink

LOL, Sandy if you're only getting a cut twice a year and a perm once, your hubby should NOT be complaining about hair dresser bills.  If he is, he should see mine and then he won't complain again!!

I can't escape a hair dresser's with a bill under $150.  Of course, I have long hair and get foil highlights so that could be a big part of the reason!!

Goodness-then I can only imagine what it would cost for ME to get highlights and a trim...youch-and here I thought spending 70.00 on a dry hairstyle was a lot!!

Well my hair is completely curly and a pain most of the time. I tend to straigten it a lot, or I did when I was in school, but now I just wash it, scrunch it and go. It gets really knotty though, so I have to brush it once in awhile, then it gets all frizzy and it drives me nuts. I really just can't win with my hair.

Smiley My hubby likes to bug me, so when he complains about my hair, it is all in fun. I'm the cheapie in our family. I hate spending money on my hair. I actually liked it when I shaved my head, I didn't have to spend time on my hair. I used to like fooling around with my hair when it was really long, but it hasn't been long for 30 years. I always say that I'm going to grow it out and leave it long but when it gets to my shoulders it seems to stop growing and then I lose patience with it and get it permed or cut. It has become a joke with my hubby complaining about cost of my hair do's. I guess because I don't spend much on myself Roll Eyes he jokes about it.
