As I mentioned in the Oscars thread this movie deserves to win best actor and best supporting actor, and I cried my eyes out like crazy. Many movies out there are set to sensitize people on the secret ravages that lie beneath things we see as beautiful and glamorous, but I don't think I'll be seeing too many bloodbath movies like this one...it had me up all night...call me silly for losing sleep over a movie lol but maybe because it had me thinking. Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) learns a powerful lesson in this movie, one about family and strength from a journalist and struggles to help a slave find his family and rescue his son from the ravages of fighting. I made a vow to myself after seeing this movie: I will never, ever buy any jewelry with diamonds. If I do, I'll make sure the diamonds are fake.

The sad reality behind the diamond industry is portrayed in this movie, and my educational background combined with my sensitivity to all the misery in the world are what prompted my choice. The movie is also based on historical facts (some of which are stated before the credits), like the war in Sierra Leone. Given that to me this movie was more than a movie, taught me more than I actually new about diamonds.
I have a co-worker who travels south once a year, and she won't swim in the ocean, has been afraid to ever since she saw the movie "Jaws". Now mind you I've seen Jaws too, and when I go to the beach I'm not afraid to swim in the Ocean.

The only diamonds I'd ever buy are Canadian diamonds from the arctic. I do plan on seeing this movie as I'm a fan of Leo's movies, and now, I will know to have a box of kleenex as well.

Why wouldn't you want to buy any jewlery with real diamonds? and all this because of a movie? Many diamonds come from Africa. A lot of horrible things go on there. People are worked to death to get the diamonds, but never see any profit from them. But people in the west don't care where the diamonds come from as long as they get their pretty baubles. I would NEVER buy a diamond from Africa. However, there is a positive note for people who want real diamonds, not fake. Northern Canada is becoming a huge producer of diamonds. My cousin's husband works at one of the diamond mines up there. And I'm pretty sure he'd tell us if he was being maimed or tortured. ~Michelle

Yes Polar (Canadian) diamonds are harvested without the use of child labour or soilders. I really can't wait to see this movie!
